Undergraduate Students
A full list of the various sources of College funding, with details of application procedures and deadlines, can be downloaded here.
Most of our undergraduate students will be funded by a tuition fee loan and a combination of government funded (SLC) maintenance grant, student maintenance loan, Oxford Bursary, parental support, and holiday earnings, and the vast majority will have thought hard about how they will manage their budget before they arrive in College.
If your financial circumstances take a turn for the worse for any reason, or if you find you need advice on how to manage your finances, please ask in the Finance Bursary to see the College Accountant, who operates as the College's Hardship Officer. You may need to make an appointment at certain times, but it is College policy to meet with a student within a maximum of 2 weeks of receiving such a request.
She can advise on applying for:
- a ‘Current Year' means testing assessment for your student loan (and Oxford Bursary), which can be very helpful if, for example, parental income has fallen by more than 15% from the base year of assessment;
- the Access to Learning Fund
- the University Hardship Fund (although strict rules apply)
- donor funded mini-bursaries (eg Harold Parr Bursaries which are advertised in Michaelmas Term);
- College hardship support if all else has failed. See our Support Policy here.
Please note that it is very much easier for the College to support students who have applied for means tested support from the student loan company, than students who have not accessed the public funding, and the Oxford University Bursary, that is available to them.
Other sources of financial support for which undergraduates will be invited to apply in the course of the year include:
- Academic Residence Grants (which subsidise the cost of a stay in college out of term time)
- Student Support Fund Grants
- Various Travel Grants (Profumo, Michael Woods, Holroyd Collieu Stelling Hall)
Graduate Students
A full list of the various sources of College funding, with details of application procedures and deadlines, can be downloaded here.
Our graduate students are often funded by research council backed studentships, which may be co-funded by College, or by private funding. The College has a duty to satisfy itself that a student will be able to fund their course, and thus requires candidates to submit evidence of how they intend to support themselves throughout their stay in Oxford. Should unforeseen circumstances arise, however, graduate students may wish to consider applying to the University Hardship Fund (see University website).
In a crisis, please make an appointment to see the College Accountant for guidance.
Other sources of financial support for which graduate students will be invited to apply in the course of their time at Brasenose include:
- Hulme Completion Grants
- Graduate Research Grants
- Student support fund grants
- Travel Grants (Profumo, Michael Woods)
