Following news of her Mildred Dresselhaus Guest Professorship award, Professor Elspeth Garman was presented with her certificate at a ceremony at the Hamburg Centre for Ultrafast Imaging, in Germany last month. During a short speech praising her work, Professor Arwen Pearson (herself an eminent biophysicist), said “Elspeth has been a role model and mentor for me during my career and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank her for her support and encouragement over the years. I am delighted that she will be able to spend a considerable amount of time here in Hamburg over the next year and am looking forward to continuing our fruitful collaboration on radiation damage mechanisms in biology. I hope that you will join me in making Elspeth feel welcome here in CUI and that I have convinced you that she is a worthy recipient of our 2016 Senior Mildred Dresselhaus Professorship.”
Elspeth responded to this praise with six sentences in German (which she practiced all afternoon – having written it out phonetically), and then talked about her research, returning to the more familiar ground of English.
