Athelstan Long matriculated at Brasenose in 1937, and was awarded his B.A. degree in 1941, followed by his M.A. (Oxon) in 1944. He was Administrator of the Cayman Islands from 1968 to 1971 and Governor from 1971 to 1972. Before this Long served in the Second World War. The Brasenose College Roll of Service notes that he served as a Captain in the Royal Artillery attached to the Indian Army, 22nd Mountain Regiment. He was one of thousands of prisoners of war subjected to forced labour on the Burma Railway, also known as the Death Railway. Despite this experience he lived to the age of 100. An obituary detailing his interesting life and career was printed in The Times (23 August 2019).
