Sir Gordon Howard Eliot Hodgkin, Artist 1932-2017

Howard Hodgkin was elected Fellow in the Creative Arts in 1976, and was for many years an Honorary Fellow of the College. During his time at Brasenose his studio was situated in Shoe Lane, Oxford and collections of his paintings appeared on exhibition at Modern Art Oxford and in the Hulme (Middle) Common Room at Brasenose.

Hodgkin studied at the Camberwell Art School and the Bath Academy of Art. His first solo show was held in 1962, and he is best remembered for his abstract paintings and prints. In 1984 he represented Britain at the Venice Biennale and in 1985 was the winner of the Turner Prize (with his painting entitled A Small Thing but My Own). His fine collection of Indian art has been exhibited around the world. Hodgkin's passion for India can be seen in many of his works, and was the focus of a BBC Imagine documentary in 2006, the same year in which a retrospective of his works was exhibited at the Tate Britain.
